Improvements to an alcohol lamp include making a vent hole in the cap, not overfilling the reservoir, and reducing the wick size for smaller-scale work by improvising a diameter-reduction adapter. Close the bottle and gently shake the ingredients together to mix them. Dip the wick into the oil, let it soak for a couple of minutes to let it absorb the oil before putting it back in its place in the burner. Charred wicks do not burn as well.
